New from the American Society of Hematology (ASH)

Blood Global Hematology is a new open-access, peer-reviewed journal that aims to publish high-quality research, local adaptions of clinical guidelines, epidemiology and public health analyses, and opinion articles that address hematologic issues of global impact and aim to improve the lives of patients all over the world, with an emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. The journal will be a focused space for dissemination of regional research, as well as research that involves global populations and international networks of collaborators. It will provide high-quality peer review and a supportive publication experience for authors, particularly those from regions currently underrepresented in the medical literature. As part of the Blood journals portfolio, Blood Global Hematology will connect to the ASH mission of educating hematologists worldwide to improve patient care. The journal will open for submissions in the fall of 2024.

With a long publishing history that demonstrates superior quality and reach, the Blood journals portfolio is a natural home for research in specialty areas of hematology. While all the Blood journals will continue to publish high-impact research from all over the world, Blood and Blood Advances are focused on publishing research of broad interest to all hematologists. Blood Global Hematology provides a space within the Blood Journals portfolio for research that will have a big influence within a localized setting or with a focus on a generalizable global impact.

Jorge Cortes, MD
Augusta University

Dr. Jorge Cortes received his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico City and completed residency at the lnstituto Nacional de la Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. He completed his Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is currently the Director of the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University following a long career at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He served as an Associate Editor for Blood and Co-Editor for Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma & Leukemia. He is Chair of the International CML Foundation, and President of the Latin American Leukemia Net.

What is the scope of the journal?

Blood Global Hematology aims to provide an international forum for the publication of original manuscripts describing basic laboratory, translational, and clinical investigations in hematology research that address issues of global reach or with a global focus. There are no submission fees for Blood Global Hematology.

When does a paper qualify for a discounted article publication fee?

Waivers and discounts for the publication fee will be applied based on the country of the corresponding author’s institutional affiliation. The fee will be waived for authors from institutions in low-income countries and authors from institutions in middle-income countries will receive a discount based on the gross national income of the country.

Are there subscriptions fees to access the content of the journal?

Blood Global Hematology is an open access, online-only journal. Content is freely accessible to anyone worldwide.

What is the peer review process for submitted articles?

Articles that pass an initial editorial evaluation will receive a peer review report from at least two, typically three, external peer reviewers. Our intent is to ensure that the perspective of local experts is part of each evaluation when possible.

What is the expected composition of the editorial team?

The Editor-in-Chief will select a Deputy Editor along with Regional Associate Editors. The regions for the Editors were developed in consideration of World Bank regional classifications and include Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, Middle East & North Africa, South & Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Regional Associate Editors will serve as ambassadors for the journal in their region to solicit the best research from their communities.

How are editorial board members selected?

The Editor-in-Chief will seek to establish an international editorial board with significant representation from low- and middle-income countries.

Will language editing support be available for authors?

Yes, we are committed to ensuring that the best science is published in the Blood journals regardless of English language proficiency. The Blood journals portfolio currently has a relationship with the language editing service Enago to help support authors with English language writing assistance and we are considering other ways to expand that support.
