Blood Journals Portfolio Selection and Manuscript Transfer

Long embraced by the hematology community, Blood has been a sought-after platform for researchers to advance their work and publish high-quality research and clinical content important to the community. Expansion of the Blood Journals Portfolio now gives more authors an opportunity to be published in a Blood journal.

The Blood Journals Portfolio is centered around Blood, ASH’s flagship journal. Blood Advances, Blood Neoplasia, Blood Vessels Thrombosis & Hemostasis (Blood VTH), Blood Immunology & Cellular Therapy (Blood ICT), Blood Red Cells & Iron (Blood RCI), and Blood Global Hematology  (Blood Global) join Blood, with the collective aim to publish the highest quality basic and clinical research from and for hematologists worldwide. This expansion is consistent with our mission to provide the resources needed to help conquer blood diseases worldwide.

Authors are encouraged to opt in to transfer submitted manuscripts across the Blood Journals Portfolio. The transfer option is available to all authors at initial submission. Note that manuscripts cannot be transferred to Blood from any of the other journals in the Blood Journals Portfolio.

  • faster time to final decision on your manuscript
  • faster time to publication
  • no need to resubmit your manuscript
  • no additional submission fee
  • peer review comments transferred with manuscript files
  • continued high level editorial and peer review by researchers and clinicians in your research area

What does it mean to opt-in to transfer a manuscript within the Blood Journals Portfolio?

At the time of initial submission, and using our online submission system, the submitting author can choose to ‘opt-in’ to transfer their manuscript to a different journal within the Blood Journals Portfolio if it is not accepted at the original journal. If the author has opted in to transfer, the manuscript will be automatically transferred to the alternate journal chosen at initial submission. Please note that manuscripts cannot be transferred to Blood from any other journal in the portfolio.

Does transfer require payment of another submission fee?

No.

Can I change my mind about automatically transferring my manuscript?

Yes. If you decide that you do not want your manuscript evaluated by the editors at the journal where you chose to transfer, you may e-mail to request that the transferred manuscript be withdrawn from consideration.

What material is transferred with my manuscript?

All available editor notes and/or peer reviewer reports will transfer with all the originally submitted manuscript files.

What happens to my transferred manuscript when it is moved to another journal within the portfolio?

When your manuscript automatically transfers to another journal in the Blood Journals Portfolio, the editors at that journal will consider all material associated with the transferred manuscript (see question above) to decide whether to accept the manuscript, or to request major or minor revisions, and whether a different article type and format will be needed to accommodate a particular journal’s guidelines.

Can I choose to transfer my rejected manuscript even if I did not opt-in to transfer automatically?

Yes, Blood Journals staff are happy to help transfer your submission from one journal to another. Please send your submission transfer request to [email protected], including the manuscript ID and title of the original submission as part of your message. Journal staff will forward your request to the appropriate editorial team, who will transfer the submission. Once the transfer is complete, you will receive a confirmation email with the updated ID and the destination journal.

Can I choose multiple journals within the Blood Journals Portfolio to which to transfer?

Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to provide authors with the choice of multiple journals within the Blood Journals Portfolio at initial submission. This feature is currently in development.

Which journal within the Blood Journals Portfolio is right for my paper?

When considering which journal to submit to, potential authors should keep in mind that:

  • Blood reviews only those manuscripts that report results and analysis that are novel, definitive, and considered impactful.
  • Blood Advances reviews only those manuscripts that are within scope and are novel and/or definitive.
  • Blood VTH, Blood Neoplasia, and Blood Global welcome submissions of high-quality manuscripts that are within the narrower scope for these specialty journals.

We recognize that submission choices are made based on various factors. These factors include:

  • the timeliness of peer review, publication, and article promotion
  • the agreement between article and journal scope
  • various journal metrics, including Impact Factor, journal h-index, cited half-life, article influence score, and immediacy index
  • familiarity with or past experiences with a given journal

If you have questions for editors of any particular journal within the Blood Journals Portfolio, please consider submitting a pre-submission inquiry to any of the individual journals using our online submission system, or e-mailing your question directed at a particular journal’s editorial team.
