Cytotrophoblast cells (green) at bottom left divide asymmetrically to fuse (top) into the outer syncytiotrophoblast layer that is in direct contact with maternal blood and acts as an anticoagulant surface under normal circumstances. This outer layer may degenerate, resulting in local thrombosis and infarction (yellow) in pathologic high-risk pregnancies (bottom right).
