Blood vessel structure in von Willebrand factor (VWF)–deficient mice. Staining of the vasculature in the ear of VWF-deficient mice or littermate controls with anti-α-SMA-Cy3. A tile scan was performed to obtain a composite image of the whole ear. Digitized images were segmented using an automated multiscale and region growing technique to create this binary image. VWF-deficient mice were found to have increased blood vessel density and fractal dimension, a measure of space filling, compared with littermate controls, supporting the evidence for a role of VWF in regulating blood vessel formation.
