ASH Recognizes a Pioneer in Hematology Education

December 10, 2023

In 1998, ASH established the Exemplary Service Award to recognize individuals whose outstanding service, extending over a period of years, has significantly advanced the interests of the Society. Elaine Muchmore, MD, will receive the 2023 Exemplary Service Award for more than two decades of dedicated and tireless service to ASH and, most importantly, for advancing the field of hematology.

In addition to leading and participating in various groups responsible for program planning and oversight, editorial products, and training-related activities, Dr. Muchmore has served as an ASH representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies, and the Association of Specialty Professors Council. Her extensive contributions have made a significant impact across the field, promoting updates to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for hematology programs to ensure an equal balance between the hematology and oncology components of hematology-oncology training programs across the U.S., especially for classical hematology. She led the development of the first hematology-oncology fellowship milestones, led efforts to coordinate ACGME and American Board of Internal Medicine procedure requirements, and served as the hematologist on the ACGME Review Committee for Internal Medicine.

Dr. Muchmore transitioned to ASH Emeritus status in May 2023. However, she continues to serve the Society by lending her expertise to various career development and trainee award study sections. A thoughtful and incisive reviewer, her care for trainee success is clear and compelling.

The Exemplary Service Award will be presented to Dr. Muchmore on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Hall A of the San Diego Convention Center.
