Judith Kleinerman, MD
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is pleased to honor Judith Kleinerman, MD, with the 2024 Exemplary Service Award for her exceptional service and dedication to the Society and the field of hematology.
The Exemplary Service Award was established in 1998 to recognize individuals whose outstanding service, extending over a period of years, has significantly advanced the interests of the Society. The award is presented by the president of ASH during the annual meeting.
Dr. Kleinerman began her service to ASH as a member of the Committee on Practice. She was very committed and inspired by ASH’s advocacy work and frequently attended ASH’s Capitol Hill visits. A passionate and impressive advocate, she shared patient stories with Congress members while connecting the dots to ASH’s policy priorities.
As part of ASH’s Choosing Wisely Task Force, she worked on creating 10 evidence-based recommendations to prompt conversations about the necessity and potential harm of certain tests and procedures. Her work on the task force led her to later join the Subcommittee on Stewardship and Systems-Based Hematology.
She served as chair of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Accreditation Committee in 2020, after having served as a member and vice chairperson, supporting the review and compliance processes for the Society’s accredited educational activities and CME accreditation. Most notably, she assisted ASH through three successful bids for reaccreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. She also contributed a guest commentary to ASH Clinical News discussing concerns voiced by many medical associations about the counterproductive aspects of accreditation.
After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1989, Dr. Kleinerman completed her fellowship in hematology and oncology at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. She retired in 2018 after working as a clinical hematologist and oncologist at Medical Specialists of Taunton in Massachusetts.
A member of ASH since 1994, Dr. Kleinerman continues to serve the Society as a member of the ASH Foundation Committee and through continued engagement in ASH’s Clinicians in Practice program and Grassroots Network.
