July 2024

Connie Eaves, PhD, died on March 7 at the age of 79. She was a pioneer in leukemia and breast cancer research, focusing on hematopoiesis and stem cells.

Dr. Eaves was a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and UBC’s School of Biomedical Engineering and was named distinguished scientist at the Terry Fox Laboratory at BC Cancer.

Throughout her career, Dr. Eaves was an active member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and served as a Councillor on ASH’s Executive Committee from 1997 to 2000, in addition to several other volunteer and committee positions. She also held positions as officer of the Order of Canada, fellow of the Royal Society, member of the American Association for Cancer Research Academy, and founding member of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy. She was the recipient of many awards, including ASH’s Henry M. Stratton Medal and E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize, and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

In addition to her groundbreaking research, Dr. Eaves was passionate about women in STEM and was a huge supporter of early-career female scientists. After being named Chatelaine’s Woman of the Year in 2019, she said, “Science needs more women because science needs smart people” in an interview with Chatelaine.

“Connie touched the lives of so many, always with warmth, and always with humor — she was quick to make those around her smile,” UBC said in an obituary. “Her loss will undoubtedly be felt throughout the research community in B.C., Canada, and around the world. Our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. We will all miss Connie dearly.”
