The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center began construction of a new 600,000-square-foot facility with the hope that it will help enable breakthrough discoveries and collaborative science.

The building, dubbed South Campus Research Building 5 (SCRB5), will be seven stories and funded by a $668 million institutional investment. SCRB5 is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

“Our research campus will serve as a collaborative hub of premier cancer research around the world, gathering thousands of the top minds in the field into one block, all focused on a singular mission to end cancer,” said Philip Jones, PhD, vice president of research strategy and operations at MD Anderson. “We’re pleased to witness the next step in our journey, and we look forward to the innovative ideas and groundbreaking discoveries that will come from this beautiful, dynamic space.”

An extension of Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park, SCRB5 will serve as a collaborative space for scientists and researchers. The goal is to create a space that fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between the two groups where research discoveries will influence efforts in-clinic, while clinical insight will provide feedback to researchers in a more efficient manner.

The building will also include lecture areas, a conference center, a restaurant, and spaces that prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and optimization.
