West Virginia University (WVU) Cancer Institute received a $50 million investment from the state to fund the expansion of research and treatments. Additionally, the investment will help fund the effort to attain National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. The funding was part of the West Virginia Fiscal Year 2024 budget and was included in House Bill 2024.

The $50 million investment will support comprehensive research programs, the individuals and facilities involved in creating innovative cancer prevention approaches, and diagnostic and treatment efforts.

By receiving NCI designation, the institute will have more opportunity for expansion. The institute plans to focus on cancer prevention, particularly in underserved populations, and increase treatment access for patients.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Virginia has the highest cancer death rate in the U.S. The WVU Cancer Institute would be the first facility to receive NCI designation in the state.

“Our goal is to place the WVU Cancer Institute in the top 2% of cancer centers nationwide, which will improve the health and wellness of the people in our state, particularly in southern West Virginia, by reducing cancer occurrence rates and increasing cancer survival,” WVU President Gordon Gee said.
