Moores Cancer Center (MCC) appointed Leslie A. Crews, PhD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Regenerative Medicine at UC San Diego, as co-leader of the MCC Hematologic Malignancies Program. Dr. Crews will be working alongside Thomas Kipps, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and Evelyn and Edwin Tasch Chair in Cancer Research. She will be succeeding Catriona Jamieson, MD, PhD, in her new role.

Currently, Dr. Crews works in leadership roles with both the National Center for Leadership in Academic Medicine and the UC San Diego Health Leadership Academy. She was also principal investigator at UC San Diego.

Dr. Crews’ expertise lies in developing new therapies for multiple myeloma (MM) and other age-related conditions. Her contributions to research and developments in leukemia and MM have improved diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients with hematologic malignancies.

One of her most notable contributions was identifying the first splice isoform signature of human blood cell aging and leukemic progression. This led to the development of unique RNA splicing and editing-specific detection tools.

“We welcome Dr. Crews to her new MCC leadership role to help guide hematologic malignancy research, with Dr. Kipps,” said Joseph Califano, MD, director of MCC.
