An educational program for patients with blood cancers and their caregivers was found to improve communication between both groups and their doctors, according to a study published in the Journal of Cancer Education.
This single-arm, pre-post study used self-report surveys to assess the acceptability and impact of a training
video for patients and caregivers. The training video was designed to model strategies for patient-provider communication using the PACES method and relay information about cancer clinical trials.
Results found the educational program increased knowledge about cancer clinical trials, improved communication with doctors, and improved patients’ and caregivers’ ability to suggest clinical trials as a treatment option. Confidence, importance, and likelihood to talk about these topics also improved.
