Shoshana Levy, PhD
Shoshana Levy, PhD, passed away on November 16, 2022, after a battle with metastatic cancer.
Dr. Levy received her PhD from Tufts University in 1970 and was a research professor of medicine in the Oncology Division at Stanford University from 1994 to 2022. Most notably, Dr. Levy was known for her discovery of tetraspanins. This family of cell surface proteins is involved in cancer metastasis and the immune system. Her research, as well as her work to cultivate an international meeting on the proteins in 2000, led to a new research field.
Dr. Levy was known by colleagues and students to be generous and inspiring, and she was a passionate advocate for women in science.
“Shoshana was consummate researcher and an engaging and generous collaborator and mentor of younger scientists,” said Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of the School of Medicine at Stanford. “Her discovery of tetraspanins spawned a new field of cancer research. Her sudden loss is felt deeply at Stanford Medicine and internationally.”
