Expert Committee Recommends FDA Standardize Bivalent COVID Boosters

An expert committee met with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to discuss COVID-19 vaccines. Specifically, the committee recommended the original versions of the vaccines be phased out and replaced with the updated formulations that target Omicron and other subvariants.

With this recommendation, individuals who haven’t yet received their first COVID-19 shot would receive the formulations that are currently being used as bivalent boosters.

The committee also expressed the desire to simplify the dosing schedule and vaccination program to reduce confusion among patients and, in turn, increase vaccination rates. To do so, the dosing schedule would be based on the age and health risks of Americans.

With this dosing schedule in mind, most adults and children who have already been vaccinated would need a single shot each fall, whereas higher risk individuals such as older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and unvaccinated children would need more than one additional shot.

The bivalent vaccines are designed to protect individuals against the original version of the virus as well as newer subvariants. However, scientists at the meeting also discussed whether future formulations should continue to be designed to fight against the original version of the virus or only new variants.
