Daniel Catovsky, MD, DSc
Daniel Catovsky, MD, DSc, passed away on December 2, 2022, at the age of 85. Professor Catovsky was an internationally admired hematologist who focused on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in addition to rare forms of leukemia.
Professor Catovsky qualified in medicine in 1961 in Buenos Aires. Shortly after, he moved to the U.K. to work with Professor David Galton, one of the first hemato-oncologists in the country. Over the years, Professor Catovsky led three randomized trials evaluating CLL treatments, followed by the Leukaemia Research Fund (LRF) CLL4 trial in 1999.
In 1988, Professor Catovsky became the Head of Academic Haematology at the Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden. He was also part of the French-American-British Co-Operative Group, which defined leukemia classification from the mid-1970s through the 1990s. Professor Catovsky also joined the British Society for Haematology as president from 1996-1997. He retired in 2003.
Professor Catovsky was not only a well-respected hematologist, but a valued mentor and colleague to many. He won multiple awards, including the medal of the British Society for Haematology (2000) and the Rai Binet Medal for outstanding contributions to CLL research (2005).
