Biden Relaunches Cancer Moonshot

March 29, 2022

April 2022

In February, the Biden administration announced the relaunch of the “Cancer Moonshot” project, a government-led initiative to end cancer. President Joe Biden has spoken repeatedly about the importance of curing the disease throughout his campaign and subsequent presidency.

Originally launched during the final year of the Obama administration and overseen by then vice president Biden, the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative was put on hold after President Obama left office. Biden renewed the effort in 2017 by developing the Biden Cancer Initiative shortly after his son, Beau, died of brain cancer.

The initiative is focused on efforts to diagnose cancer sooner by increasing access to screening, with a focus on equity and addressing inequities across race and region. About $400 million in funding remains of the $1.8 billion that the Cancer Moonshot received over seven years in through the 21st Century Cures Act, which Congress passed in 2016.
