ASH Awarded Grant for VTE Quality Measure Development

January 31, 2022

February 2022

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded a grant to ASH for the development of clinical quality measures specifically targeting the implementation of clinical pretest probability tools into practice to improve the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE).

The project aims to increase the use of these tools to safely limit iatrogenic harm from over-testing. Researchers will operationalize their measures based on two diagnostic pathways: one that focuses on whether a prediction tool was used to assess risk level for patients suspected of PE and a second that addresses whether appropriate clinical actions occurred based on the results of use of the tool.

This is one of 10 new projects that the Moore Foundation is funding for clinical quality measures specifically targeting diagnostic excellence. The foundation’s Diagnostic Excellence Initiative, and the projects of the selected grantees, will give clinicians and medical institutions the ability to track and measure their success and failure rates with the goal of implementing improvements.

More information about ASH’s hematology quality metrics and other clinical performance measures is at hematology.org/education/clinicians.
