State Governments May Soon Be Able to Import Drugs

December 30, 2021

President Donald Trump said he would give U.S. states the right to purchase prescription drugs from abroad to help boost consumer access to cheaper medications.

"They're going to buy from other countries and skip all of the nonsense," said President Trump, who campaigned on lowering drug prices. He claims to be working with several governors, including Ron DeSantis (R-FL), on the plan.

Although officials have considered allowing state governments to buy drugs from other countries for years, the idea hasn't been implemented due to federal safety regulations and strong opposition from the pharmaceutical industry.
