The American Society of Hematology (ASH) selected Shakira J. Grant, MBBS, MSCR, as the 2023-2024 ASH Congressional Fellow. The Congressional Fellow program aims to connect hematologists to the policy-making process and educate congressional members and staff about issues that are important to hematologists and their patients.
It is hard to believe that a year has now passed since I moved to Washington, DC, to join the 51st class of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Science & Technology Policy Fellowship as ASH's 2023-2024 Congressional Fellow. This year has been a whirlwind of experiences and learning opportunities, both on and off the Hill. As I reflect on my time here, it’s difficult to capture all the highlights because each moment has been infused with excitement, discovery, and deep personal evolution.
The Year in Review
This year has been an exhilarating journey filled with intense challenges and rewarding triumphs. From preparing for hearings and markups to navigating the relentless pace of DC, every moment has demanded my full engagement. Amid the whirlwind, the opportunity to attend galas, receptions, and briefings offered unparalleled networking experiences, immersing me deeper into the dynamic world of health policy. The preparation for committee activities, the fast-paced daily operations, and the meticulous planning for each step have been educational. Yet, the true highlights of my year extend beyond professional achievements — they lie in the meaningful relationships and connections I’ve forged along the way.
The individuals I have met during my fellowship have profoundly influenced me. They generously shared their knowledge and experience, deepening my understanding of health policy, politics, and leadership. These interactions have been pivotal in my professional development and personal evolution. The mentorship and camaraderie I’ve experienced here have been indispensable, offering support and guidance that have fundamentally shaped my outlook and future career path.
Key Takeaways
One of the most important lessons I have learned is the value of taking bold steps in one’s career. For anyone contemplating a career pivot from academia, my advice is simple: Take the plunge. Pursue what you love, engage in work where you can have the most impact, and stay true to the motivations that keep you grounded. Internal motivation is crucial for maintaining focus and achieving personal fulfillment. There is no single path to success; what truly matters is finding joy and purpose in your work.
Two years ago, I could never have imagined being in this position or engaging in public service at this scale, working to help shape health care policies that affect millions of Americans. Bringing my authentic self into this environment and witnessing the real-world impact of my work has been deeply fulfilling. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of pursuing your passions and embracing opportunities that align with your core values and aspirations.
Reflections on the Fellowship Experience
My fellowship journey began with a two-week orientation that was both fascinating and overwhelming. During this period, we delved into the three branches of government and their functions. This flood of information laid the groundwork for the year ahead, providing a solid foundation in the legislative process and the role of science in policymaking.
One of the most memorable moments of my fellowship was the first time I sat on the dais in the Ways and Means Committee room during a hearing. Intently listening as witnesses testified, I felt a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. Looking at the members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, seated on the upper and lower dais, I could not help but reflect on my journey to this point.
As a first-generation university graduate, a foreign medical graduate, and an immigrant, my path has been filled with obstacles and challenges. Overcoming these hurdles to craft a meaningful and impactful career has been a significant achievement. Sitting in that committee room, I no longer saw myself as an academic physician chasing tenure milestones. Instead, I embraced the uncertainty and excitement of working in the U.S. Congress, where the decisions made have far-reaching implications for millions of people.
This experience has been surreal yet deeply rewarding. Knowing that our work can affect millions of Americans is both humbling and invigorating, adding a profound sense of responsibility and purpose to every decision we make. It is a stark contrast to the academic world, where the focus is often narrower and more specialized. Here, every action and policy recommendation have the potential to effect change on a national scale.
Final Thoughts
As I reflect on this year, another key takeaway is the importance of embracing uncertainty and seizing opportunities as they arise. Life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths, and it is essential to remain open to new experiences and challenges. The uncertainty that comes with stepping into a new role or environment can be daunting, but it also brings opportunities for growth.
I am immensely grateful for the experiences and opportunities that the Science & Technology Policy Fellowship has provided. The skills and knowledge I have gained, the relationships I have built, and the impact I have made are all testaments to the value of this fellowship. Looking ahead, I am optimistic about the future and excited to continue making a difference in health policy.
For those considering a similar path, my advice is to embrace the journey with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Success is not about following a predetermined path but about finding joy and purpose in your work. Stay true to your passions, seek out opportunities that align with your values, and do not be afraid to take bold steps in your career. The experiences and growth that come from stepping outside your comfort zone are invaluable.
In conclusion, this year has been an incredible journey of learning, growth, and affecting change. This fellowship has provided a unique platform to contribute to meaningful health care issues while developing professionally and personally. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned, the relationships forged, and the confidence to continue making a difference in the world of health policy. Thank you for following along on this journey, and I look forward to the future with optimism and excitement.
