Walter J. Curran Jr., MD
Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta named Walter J. Curran Jr., MD, head of the Piedmont Oncology Institute. He joined Piedmont after serving as the global chief medical officer for GensisCare for the past three years.
In his new role, Dr. Curran will head Piedmont Oncology, oversee clinical trials statewide, and lead oncologists in the Piedmont Physician Enterprise.
Dr. Curran is known internationally for his work in oncology, authoring more than 800 papers and abstracts, reviewing 12 medical journals, chairing more than 40 clinical trials, and receiving four lifetime achievement gold medals from national societies.
“The addition of Dr. Curran to the Piedmont family will raise our stature in oncology worldwide and among our patients from Georgia and beyond,” said Charles L. Brown, III, MD, CEO of Piedmont Physician Enterprise. “Through his vast expertise and experience in cancer care and research, Wally is one of the best in the field. Period.”
In addition to his work at GensisCare, Dr. Curran spent 11 years as the executive director of Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. He also was principal investigator and chairman of NRG Oncology and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
